– We virtually attended the annual Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), a global body comprising member governments and cetacean experts which meet to review and analyze whale stocks around the world including current trends and the impacts of whaling and other activities. During the conference, which was conducted virtually May 12-24, we provided resources and case studies for the IWC’s Handbook for Whale Watching, and, worked with the IWC Bycatch Mitigation Initiative (BMI) to plan a pilot project in Ecuador and discussed data collection from whale-watching vessels as platforms for opportunistic research.
