Abigail Machernis is a research biologist based in Hawaiʻi and curates our humpback whale photo-identification catalogs. Her expertise is in using photo-identification monitoring of cetaceans to guide conservation and management actions. Prior to moving to Hawaiʻi, Abigail worked for NOAA Fisheries southeast office where she contributed to preparing the Status Review Report and ESA final rule for the newly described Rice’s whale. She also assisted with research into the impacts of human interactions on bottlenose dolphins in the Florida panhandle. She joined PWF in 2018 to manage our humpback whale photo-identification catalogs and assist with Hawaiʻi field studies.
