Run and walk for a cause -- register online today
Maui residents and visitors are invited to take part in this benefit race, one of Maui's largest fun runs and walking events. The race includes a 2.5 mile walk, 5K run, 10K run and half marathon run. It's a fundraiser to support humpback whale research in Hawaii and other parts of the Pacific, marine education programs for local schoolchildren, as well as conservation programs including efforts to prevent vessel-whale collisions, end whaling worldwide and keep marine debris out of our oceans.
The Run and Walk for the Whales course begins and ends at a new location -- alongside Ma’alaea Harbor at the Ma’alaea Harbor Shops. The easy-to-follow courses are mostly flat and fast, good news for runners seeking to PR! The festivities take place in the plaza at the Ma'alaea Harbor Shops and include live entertainment by Marty Dread; a post-race continental breakfast for runners served by Porto; tours of Pacific Whale Foundation’s research lab, education center and offices; and discounted whalewatches for race participants.
The entry fee includes professional chip timing for runners in the 5K, 10K and half marathon, plus clock timing for all walking events. Each walker and runner will receive a “Run and Walk for the Whales” quick dry t-shirt.  Water and Gatorade aid stations will be located along the course. (View course map at

Pacific Whale Foundation's marine education team will be offering a morning version of its popular Ocean Camp on race day for children ages 4 to 12. The program takes place from 6 am to 10 am at Pacific Whale Foundation's Discovery Center in Ma'alaea. The cost is $35 per child and is titled "All About Whales."  If Mom and Dad both want to race, sign up for this program in advance to ensure that your child has fun, learns about whales through a dynamic hands-on program, and is well-cared for by a professional team.
Throughout the morning children will participate in a variety of activities including an interactive presentation, video footage of whales our researchers have encountered, whale games that teach about behaviors and interesting facts, investigations that help children understand how whales deal with temperature changes of cold Alaskan waters to our warm waters of Maui, movement to illustrate migration, and of course whale art. Children will walk away from their experience ready to share the wonders of humpback whales with their families and friends. Our program is staffed by professional marine educators with a ration of 1 adult per 8 children. Enrollment is limited to 30 children. Pre-registration is required. Please call Pacific Whale Foundation at (808) 249-8811 ext. 1.
