December 2014 Events at Pacific Whale Foundation

‘Tis the season for festive holiday cruises with the experts at Pacific Whale Foundation, including New Year’s Eve Cocktail Cruises from Lahaina and Ma‘alaea Harbors on December 31. Our Ocean Camp is a great way to keep the kids engaged and entertained during winter break, with sessions on December 29-31 and January 5-9. And our popular Trail of the Whale information stations will be offered along Maui’s coasts starting December 15. This year, visitors to all four stations can get their trail “passports” stamped to receive a free gift from our Ocean Store (612 Front St. in Lahaina or at the Ma‘alaea Harbor Shops). Fridays, December 5, 12, 19, 26 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Get onboard for lots of fun, food and dancing on Pacific Whale Foundation’s Island Rhythms Sunset Cocktail Cruise with local reggae star Marty Dread. Offered Friday nights from Ma‘alaea Harbor, this cruise includes delicious appetizers, perfectly mixed Mai Tais and other cocktails (for adults 21+ with valid picture i.d.), plus a stunning sunset backdrop as you party with Marty on the bow of the boat.

Sundays, December 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 8am-11am

Join us on this whale photography workshop at sea. Whether you are a novice or an experienced photographer, this unique hands-on adventure will help you learn and practice expert techniques for photographing whales and other wildlife. You’ll depart from Lahaina Harbor on Ocean Adventurer, a smooth-riding raft that offers inspiring water-level views. Led a professional nature photographer, you’ll discover the most effective camera settings for our local conditions at sea. Bring your own digital camera and learn to get the best results from whatever model you currently own. Didn’t bring your camera? We also rent Canon PowerShot digital cameras from our Ocean Store. Safari includes free whale poster and collection of digital images taken by our photographers.

Sunday, December 7 from 8:00pm - 10:00pm

What could be more romantic and fun than cruising on the vast Pacific Ocean under a brilliant full moon? This Pacific Whale Foundation Eco-Adventure is narrated by Harriet Witt, an international award winning astronomy writer and speaker known for her entertaining and informative commentary on all things lunar. The cruise includes beverages, appetizers, dessert and a free full-color marine life poster.

Brittle stars, urchins, octopi, oh my! Meet some of the fascinating creatures that roam South Maui’s tidepools at night during Pacific Whale Foundation’s Moonlight Tidepool Exploration. This discovery event is recommended for people ages 6 and is co-sponsored by Mana Kai Maui Resort. Refreshments will be provided.

Monday, December 22 from 8:00pm - 10:00pm

Experience the enchantment of Maui's velvet night sky on this stargazing cruise with Pacific Whale Foundation Eco-Adventures. Here in Hawaii, the most remote island chain in the world, you'll experience brilliant stars from an optimal vantage point. Your special guest narrator is Harriet Witt, an international award-winning astronomy writer and speaker. The cruise includes beverages, appetizers, dessert and a free full-color marine life poster.

There’s no better way to celebrate a beautiful Christmas morning than on the majestic Pacific Ocean. Pacific Whale Foundation’s Christmas Brunch Cruise departs from Lahaina Harbor and includes a delectable holiday buffet, spectacular views, and as a special bonus of the season -- sightings of humpback whales are very likely! Adults 21+ (with valid picture i.d.) may enjoy up to three complimentary cocktails, and there’s also unlimited soda and juice. It’s fun for all ages and offers a truly Maui-style way to celebrate the Christmas holiday.

Eat, drink and be merry aboard Pacific Whale Foundation's festive Christmas Dinner Cruise. You’ll be served a traditional holiday dinner in one the world’s most beautiful settings -- the Pacific Ocean at sunset. As a special bonus of the season, sightings of humpback whales are also very likely! Enjoy live entertainment, up to three complimentary cocktails for adults 21+ (with valid picture i.d.), and spectacular views of Maui’s majestic coastline. You’ll need to book early to experience this truly island-style Christmas.

Pacific Whale Foundation Ocean Camp (for grades 1 - 5)
December 2014: Monday - Wednesday, December 29 - December 31, 8:00am - 4:00pm
January 2015: Monday - Friday, January 5 - 9, 8:00am - 4:00pm

Pacific Whale Foundation’s Ocean Camp offers fun and adventure for kids in grades 1 through 5 at PWF’s Discovery Center at the Ma‘alaea Harbor Shops. Ocean Camp features a different theme each session and a variety of field trips and activities -- including surfing lessons, snorkel cruises, beach visits, art projects, science explorations, and more. Led by PWF’s experienced and enthusiastic marine educators, the adult to camper ratio is approximately 1:12. Camp registration fees are $80 per day or $325 for the week. PWF Members pay just $64 per day or $260 for the week. Last minute registration is $88 per day ($70 for PWF Members). New Year’s Eve Cocktail Cruise -- Ma‘alaea Harbor OR Lahaina Harbor
Wednesday, December 31 at 10:15pm and 10:45pm

Ring in the New Year aboard Pacific Whale Foundation’s fun and festive starlight cruise, departing from Ma‘alaea and Lahaina Harbors. You'll love the live island-style musical entertainment, tantalizing appetizers, unlimited soda and juice, and up to three complimentary cocktails for adults 21+ (with valid picture i.d.), including a champagne toast at midnight. It's a uniquely Maui way to ring in 2015!

Trail of the Whale

Starting December 15 through mid-May, Pacific Whale Foundation’s trained naturalists will be stationed at key points along Maui’s coast to help you locate and learn about whales from shore. These information stations are open to all and offer:

·         hands-on exploration with marine models, artifacts and binoculars
·         interesting insights into Maui's geography, natural history and unique ecosystem
·         fascinating facts about whales, dolphins, turtles, coral reefs and other marine life
·         free gift from our Ocean Store when you complete the trail

Visit all four information stations and receive a FREE GIFT when you bring your stamped “Trail of the Whale” certificate to our Ocean Store at 612 Front St. in Lahaina or at the Ma‘alaea Harbor Shops. To get started, pick up a new certificate from the Ocean Store or at any point along the Trail of the Whale:

Volunteering on Vacation

Volunteering on Vacation is a free year-round program offered by Pacific Whale Foundation that helps you easily find meaningful service projects to benefit Maui's environment. Volunteer for about half a day (or less) and enjoy access to off-the-beaten-trails and scenic locales where you can learn about the history and natural ecosystem of each area:

·         Haleakala National Park - First and Third Saturdays
·         Malama Honokowai - Every Saturday
·         Hoaloha'aina (South Maui) - Every Monday
·         O'o Farm (Waipoli, Kula) - Every Wednesday
·         Hawaiian Islands Land Trust (Waihee Coastal Dunes) - Every Friday
·         Beach Clean-up with Pacific Whale Foundation - Daily on your own schedule
