Pacific Whale Foundation Founder and Executive Director Greg Kaufman traveled to Praia do Forte, Brazil in late March as an invited presenter at an International Whaling Commission (IWC) workshop to discuss a proposal to create a Southern Atlantic Whale Sanctuary (SAWS) where whale hunting would not be allowed. 
 
The workshop took place from March 19 through March 21 and was organized by the 


 A dynamic group of whale researchers from Hawaii, Ecuador and Chile, along with the producer of the documentary "Blackfish"and the Executive Director of Orca Network, will be offering free presentations about their work as part of "Evenings with the Experts" hosted by Pacific Whale Foundation on Thursday, March 13 and Friday, March 14.
 
"Evenings with the Experts" will also include a free screening of "Blackfish."
 

Over 100 volunteers worked with Pacific Whale Foundation researchers on Saturday, February 22, 2014 to record 1,331 humpback whale sightings during the annual Great Whale Count off Maui.

This year's count had more sightings than the 2013 count, during which 1,126 whales were recorded. (Scroll down to view chart with complete data.)


World renowned artist Robert Lyn Nelson will present a dramatic oil and acrylic painting, Imperiled Leviathan, along with other recent works, at World Whale Day on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Kalama Park in Kihei. The event takes place from 9 am to 7 pm. Admission is free. 
 
The 48" x 48" painting, depicting underwater whales and dolphins is priced at $100,000, with the full sale price to be donated to Pacific Whale Foundation to support whale research, marine education programs for children and conservation efforts. 

 "The Pacific Whale Foundation Radio Hour with Greg Kaufman" -- a  new show offering the latest discoveries and news about humpback whales and dolphins --  will launch on Tuesday, February 4 from 12 noon to 1 pm on KAOI 1110 AM and 96.7 FM, and online at http://kaoi1110.com.

"The Pacific Whale Foundation Radio Hour with Greg Kaufman" will air every Tuesday through March 11, to coincide with the peak of whalewatch season on Maui.


A free outdoor presentation titled "Whales Under the Stars" will be offered by Pacific Whale Foundation on Friday, February 14 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm  at Kalama Park in Kihei. The public is invited.


Maui visitors and residents will be celebrating and honoring the presence of the whales off the coast of Maui at the 34th Annual World Whale Day Celebration on Saturday, February 15 at Kalama Park on South Kihei Road, Kihei.

World Whale Day is hosted by the nonprofit Pacific Whale Foundation. More than 20,000 people attended last year. World Whale Day starts at 9 am and continues until 7 pm. Admission is free.
