Whale and Dolphin Tracker

In 2010, Pacific Whale Foundation designed and built the web-application Whale and Dolphin Tracker to allow Pacific Whale Foundation’s Eco-Adventures to gather valuable research data on whale and dolphin distribution, behavior, and life histories in the region surrounding Maui, Lana'i, Kaho'olawe and Molokai. Since then, the program has logged over 10,000 sightings of dolphins and humpback whales to our research database. By utilizing Pacific Whale Foundation Eco-Adventures vessels as platforms of opportunity, the PWF research team is able to increase survey effort and record large numbers of sightings at a scale that is not possible with a single research vessel.

All sightings are posted live and shared with the public through Pacific Whale Foundation’s sightings map.

The program has proven successful in the pilot phase, and this season we are encouraging the public to log their whale and dolphin sightings. To help implement the final phase of the project, Pacific Whale Foundation is seeking funds to convert Whale and Dolphin Tracker into an app, available to download onto your mobile device.

To date, Pacific Whale Foundation has funded the development, management and hosting costs of the web application and we are now petitioning the public to facilitate this final phase of the project. Additionally, the use of Whale and Dolphin Tracker as a management tool was presented to the International Whaling Commission in 2014 and was extremely well received. With your donation, we can extend the reach of Whale and Dolphin Tracker to directly involve the public and improve our understanding of these species.

Fully fund the project: $7500.00
