In The Neighborhood "La Ensenada", The Little School Jamie Roldos

On Friday the 19th of August we decided to go to a small school in Puerto Lopez called Jaime Roldos (see blog from the 3rd of August to know who Jaime Roldos was in Ecuador's history). It's a small school which cannot be seen from the road, and it's located in a neighborhood called La Ensenada. La Ensenada was the original name of Puerto Lopez and means “the place where the water becomes calm”... ideal to anchor boats, and that's why fishing activities developed before tourism in this town. This neighborhood is still populated mainly by fishermen's families: nets are piled up at the entrance of nearly every house...

We entered the school during the break. The young director who was in charge of the 6th grade brought us to a small classroom where the instruments for the parade where stored: drums, lyras, timpanis and many more. The children helped us to put all the instruments in a corner, and sat down on the floor. As there was not enough space to project and there were only 15 children we just showed the slides and the videos directly on the laptop.

Very close to us there were two more classrooms with smaller children, so we had to talk louder than usual to be heard over their noise. And from time to time some heads of curious kids appeared in the doorway....

So while Enora was talking of humpback whales and other marine mammals and showing presentations and videos, Simona showed the puppets to the younger kids of the class nextdoor and they explained to her what they where doing in class. All this under the amuzed gaze of the teacher.

Later on Enora and Simona, each one with a group of 6 children, played the Whale's Journey while Alison was helping the other children solve the puzzles. A real team effort, so that each child got his or her needed attention.

We ended the morning taking a picture of the 3 winners: the 3 whales that first got to Ecuador! Afterwords all the children wanted us to take a group picture with the puppets! What a success!

I've stayed in Puerto Lopez for three years when studying for my online leadership course and my son went to the very same school you have visited. He still vividly remembers the stories you have told about whales and dolphins and marine life became his passion ever since. You are doing a great job raising awareness about these beautiful animals and children get to find out more about the mysteries of the oceans in a fun and educational manner.
