In Machalilla, The School "5 De Junio"

On Thursday the 18th of August the three of us took a bus  to Machalilla. We left the main road to look for the primary school “5 de Junio”. When we asked the kids why the school is called that, and they said it's because that's the day of the environment.  In fact, entering the school we were welcome by a big mural with a sentence meaning “we take care of what we love” and featuring a whale's tale, fishes, a sea star and sea turtles. However, we later found out that the 5th of June is also an important date in Ecuador's history, as on that date in 1895 Eloy Alfaro's liberal revolution triumphed. This revolution has been an important step for the country as it permitted the government to take over the control of many spheres of the civil society (official education; register of marriages, births and deaths; marriage contract regulation...) which were in the hands of the Church. The most dynamic social classes were the farmers from the coast, and craftsmen - especially in Guayaquil, and liberal intellectuals divulging radical ideas. In 1906 the titanic work of the Transandean railway was completed. Eloy Alfaro was killed in January 1912.

We talked to the director, who told us that part of the children of the 6th grade were practicing for the parade of the 31st of August, the day of the county. In fact, we could hear very well (and very loud!) the lyres and the drums.... We got the 21 children of the 7th grade together and went to the computing room, the only place where it was possible to project.

Simona and Enora started the talk improvising a small puppet theater to explain the different classes of animals: fishes, mammals and reptiles and how to distinguish them. “Whales are like us!” said the kids “We're all mammals!”. As usual after the presentation and different videos we all sat down on the ground to play  with our game “The Journey of the Whale” and with the puzzles. These games are always are very welcome by the children! And last but not least, the puppets... the real stars of our environmental education course: the whale, the dolphin, the turtle and the shark.

On our way back from the school we walked a little on the seaside of the village, full of fish nets and boats to catch prawns. In fact, the work of most inhabitants of Machalilla has to do with fishing.

In aquatic mammals such as whales, however, there is no great difference between the outer and inner environments. Instead of sound passing through the outer ear to the middle ear, whales receive sound through the throat, from which it passes through a low impedance fat filled cavity to the inner ear. Thanks.
