Water depth:  425 feet
Location:  South Maui, near Kama'ole Beach
  • A large pod of spinner dolphins, estimated at 100-150 animals, was seen by Ocean Discovery, Ocean Intrigue and Ocean Quest today. This sighting just off the Kihei coastline is somewhat unusual, as large groups of spinner dolphins are more frequently seen outside Honolua Bay on the northwest side or in the Auau Channel between Maui and Lana'i.

11/8/11
Location: Ma'alaea harbor to west Maui
  • A breathtaking day for the first whale search of the season aboard Ocean Explorer. Catch a glimpse of Haleakala and the slopes of Kahalawai above Ma'alaea Harbor on route to the calm waters off Lahaina. The view of Olowalu and Ukumehame valleys define the classic west Maui view. The highlight of the trip is a close encounter with Pantropical spotted dolphins-look closely for the characteristic white spot on the end of the rostrum.

Humpback Whale
Active subadult 2 miles west off of tunnel. Saw blow from a distance, as we
approached a large school (20) of BND surfaced around the whale. Whale breached fully, followed by 4 half breachs. Dolphins were active, bowriding and jumping around the whale and vessel. Also saw bubble blowing underwater from HBW. Amazing encounter!

at x marks the spot. 4 adults that bow rode for a moment then went to ride on a raft that was present too. Headed west and were seen just off fish rock during our snorkel. Much touching and rubbing and just a playful group.
